The ‘Digital Twin’ : How BIM is a Springboard to Bridge the Physical and the Digital Worlds

With the dazzling technological development of the recent years, the physical world and the virtual world have come even closer together. After the introduction of various Virtual and Augmented Reality solutions and advancements in Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins have become the new futuristic obsession of various sectors. Developed in the early 2000s, this concept has now come into the spotlight as a technology that is even more avant-garde than Building Information Modeling. Learn how this NEW opportunity can enhance asset performance, help actors anticipate adverse environmental effects during the life cycle stages, forecast maintenance activities based on sensor data and bring further benefits for built asset all across the globe.

We will explore what Digital Twins are and how they extend the lifespan of BIM data to all lifecycle stages from conception to construction, and from marketing to smart-facilities and smart-cities management through an integrated pipeline and preparing us all to the era of Spatial Computing that is defined by VR/AR, AI/ML, IoT.

Learning Objectives:

  • What does the future look like for our smart-cities and smart-buildings at the intersection of VR/AR, IoT and AI and 5G?
  • What is a Digital Twin? How does it function? Where are they used today? How do they improve operational performance?
  • How does BIM help us get to the era of Spatial Computing?
  • Where do we stand? How do we get there? What are some of the cross-domain challenges to overcome?
